If you are looking for a way to transfer media files from your computer to your big screen TV, one of the easiest and fastest ways to accomplish this with a minimum amount of fuss is a usb DVD player. Philips includes a USB port as a standard component on most of their dvd players. Other brands, such as Sanyo or Pioneer, will also include this feature on many of their models as well.

Once you start using a DVD player with a usb port you will wonder how you ever lived without it. You can stop buying blank DVDs or CD-Rs and you don't have to sit around waiting for your media to burn to the disc.

All you need to do is transfer your media to a flash drive and plug it into the usb port of your DVD player and you are ready to watch your video on your large screen television while sitting on your comfy couch.

If you have a great speaker system, you can also transfer your MP3s onto the flash drive and be listening to them through your surround sound system in a minute or two.

Use a Flash Drive to Play your Video Files

List Price: $27.99

Since I download most of my media in AVI or DIVX format, this is how I handle everything today. It has freed up tons of storage space in my apartment and saved me money as well because I'm no longer spending it on blank media. Now, all of my media is stored on a separate external hard drive. And the USB stick I can just delete and reload over and over again.

Here are several USB DVD players for you to consider.

Philips DVD Player DVP5990

Philips DVD Player with USB - DVP5990

I nearly always stick to the Philips brand for DVD players. They are solidly built and nearly all of them can play DIVX and virtually any other type of file that you can throw at it. The USB ports make them even more convenient.

While you could spend a couple of hundred dollars on a DVD player, I really don't think there is much need for that. So this Philips dvd players cost less than $50.00. The Philips DVP5990 is one of their most popular models.

Philips DVP5990/F7 DVD Player with 1080p HDMI Upconversion and DivX
This is an upconverting DVD player with HDMI output. File types playable include DIVX, AVi, MP3, WMA, etc. You can use a flash drive with this, or you can use a regular external hard drive as long as it is formatted for FAT. A nice timesaver. Oh yes, and it is also region free with some button pushing on the remote control.

More DVD Players with USB Ports

If you don't want the Philips DVD player, you have some other options as well. Sanyo, Samsung, Pioneer and Coby all make models with a USB port.

A lot of folks would love a Sony DVD Player with USB, but as far as I can tell, they don't make one. They do sell some Blu-Ray players with usb ports, but I don't believe they will play all of the different file types you are likely to download. They are really just for extra blu-ray storage.

So your best bet is to stick with the less expensive brands. Most of them are more versatile when it comes to file types, anyway.

Samsung DVD-1080P9 1080p Upconverting DVD Player
Like the Philips, the Samsung player can handle virtually any file type you are likely to throw at it, and it features a USB port on the front of the player for easy media viewing and listening.

Hi. I am converting avi file movies plus srt file subtitles into one DivX file. Some software don't burn DVD disk. The Philips DVP 5990 Player (or similar players) with USB conector would play such a DivX file with subtitles from a USB pendrive? Thanks!

Albert, I'm pretty sure the Panasonic at KMart would have no problem playing AVI files.
